If there are no good command options in PowerDefragmenter...then just use Contig + Defrag. Both can be automated with BAT-files. Contig is freeware, Defrag is built-in Windows defragmenter. PowerDefragmenter does exactly the same - running first Contig, then Defrag.

Contig: contig [-v] [-a] [-s] [-q] [existing file] contig [-v] -n [new file] [new file length] -v: Verbose -a: Analyze fragmentation -q: Quiet mode -s: Recurse subdirectories If youwant to defragment the whole drive C: contig -s C:\*.* Same goes for all files in desired folder, you can even specify only which type of files to be defragmented. Contig can create files with desired size, something as "pre-alocating". Defrag defrag <volume> [-a] [-f] [-v] [-?] volume drive letter or mount point (d: or d:\vol\mountpoint) -a Analyze only -f Force defragmentation even if free space is low -v Verbose output -? Display this help text Defrag is normally located in WINDOWS\system32 folder

I'm running it right now - it's been running for near 10 minutes and it's still going. I didn't think my C: drive is in all that bad of shape, but I am running the Power Mode scan. Edit - Okay, I take that back, it just stopped. About 10 minutes each for both drives (C: & F:) If it's not fixed, then don't broke it! Last edited by Gig-O-Ram; December 15th, 2007 at 22:20.

One of the things, that slower down deftragmenting is that the "-q" switch is NOT used in Contig when runs through Power Defragmenter GUI. This causes Contig to retrieve and display more info about the files it checks. Anyway, this could be a major issue only if the HDDs are too big and filled with a lot of small files.

Quakindude - just wanted to say thanks. I originally found this and installed it on my laptop, but had lost track of it. Found it again recently and it's great for the new desktop. ![]()

| I'm Diggin it! | I've found Contig to provide me with all the defragmenting goodness I need. As with any product or service, your individual needs will determine the value of this program. It was only compared to the built in defrag app for Windows XP. I believe it to be a better app than the included one in XP. Every time I format and reinstall my OS, I set my swap file on a separate drive and give it a fixed value of 3072. This increases swap file (Page file) performance and helps mitigate fragmenting. Since I reinstall my OS at least once every 6 months, if not more, I'm not concerned over having swap file defragmentation capabilities. Contig isn't going to do that for you. You may be able to use switches to create a batch file to automate Contig and make it do the swap file, but I've found no need for that. If Contig meets your needs, great. If not, there's certainly no lack of apps out there, some of them free, that will meet your needs.
