For anyone using the Classic view for the XP star menu, the Help & Support menu between the Run and Search menus gets annoying if you accidentally click on it and have the Help window come up.

To get rid of this menu, a simple registry entry is needed.
1. Drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced
2. Create a new DWORD entry and call it NoStartMenuHelp
3. Double-click on the new entry and set the value to 1

That's it, the menu should be gone now. If you ever need the Help, click on the desktop somewhere and press F1.

Here's mine.

If you want a Shut Down, Hibernate and Restart Icon on your desktop, do the following:

Right click in an empty space on your desktop, then New, then Shortcut.

A box will pop up and in the location for the item, type the following, bolded words only:

Shutdown Icon: %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 01

Restart: %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 0

Hibernate: %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -h -t 0

If for some reason, any of them doesn't work, then right click the new shortcut, click properties and then look at the "Start In" box. For the new shortcuts, it should read: %windir%

Once you have the new shortcuts, you can then right click, properties and then change icon to put an Icon on them.

Start, run, regedit

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console"

Change screencolors to 2. Now you command prompt is green! You can edit other settings too if you wish, but be careful!

I'll contribute something of actual help later.

Simple solution that involves going into the registry and editing some entries.

I put this tweak on just about every computer I build or run.
HA! Thanks.

Default Re: computer tips!!!!

this really isn't a computer hardware related but i just went through the process and it saved me time and effort.

if you need to fax an electronic document (.doc or .pdf) and do not own a fax machine, you do not have to leave your computer desk.

- go to faxzero.com
- enter your name, email address, receiver's name, and fax number (10 digits)
- upload the document (.doc or .pdf files only)
- enter confirmation code
- press "send free fax now"
- check your email inbox and find confirmation email from faxzero
- click on link to send fax

and that's it. i just had to go thru this process today because i didn't receive my full corsair rebate. they would not take the invoice as an email attachment and would only accept a fax. i do not use a fax machine often enough to buy one and i don't have a job so i can't use one at work either. in the past, if i ever had to fax anything, i had to go to kinko's or fedex and pay their fees. but this is a quick and easy way to fax a document you have stored on your computer. and its FREE!

What? People actually use Outlook Express? I have no idea why when Outlook, Thunderbird, and just about every other email client out there have more and better features.

My advice is if you're moving to a computer, get a new Email Client to go with it.
