Yeah on the 64 bit side I know I will have to as we upgrade at work :(. 3dsMax and Autodesk in general is really a friend of intel and Max was the first app to REALLY show a 64 bit version and hardcore hit multi threading in windows. It may mean the end to my gaming days since it's more important to me to get good looking art than play. Hopefully it will be another year of two before we upgrade at work so I can wait for drivers to mature. The problem is Max and Combustion (my compositing app) both use what is called a Ram player. A Ram Player is an old amiga trick of loading a series of images into ram so that there is no possiblity of dropping a frame that can make it look like your animation has a mistake or "hitch". With video going HD that means the individual frame data has gone up buy 8 times a standard definition frame, and that means the amount I can preview uncompressed is FAR smaller, thus the desire for more ram.

On another note I have a 120mm fan in front and 2 60mm fans in back as per the Lanbox case, question is it has space for another 60 in back, do I need it?

I went ahead and also bought the ram last night I was talking about. I got a really good deal off Buy.com it was $149.99 and had a rebate for $30 and got another $30 off for getting thier visa card wich I'll cancel as soon as I get :). That makes it $89.99 for Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz 240-pin DDR2 Memory good deal.

about the fans, i'd only say maybe. heat can be a problem in smaller cases and with a quad core aswell... i'd say get an extra fan. if u need it, u need it. If not, oh well

to answer your questions about the lan-box
i did a build in one yesterday & today
no a blue-orb will not fit, Get the zalman cooler.
you should definitely get that extra 60mm fan, it WILL help
get the corsair 620w modular PSU.
the modular-ness for it is perfect.

as for an optical, make SURE you get a sata optical, the costs aren't different really, after shipping.

if you can, just get 1 500gb W/D caviar, it opens up a HUGE area for airflow once you get rid of the extra harddrive cage, and there is absolutely no real-world difference between the 500gb caviar and the raptor.
trust me you'll thank yourself.

Huh????

Hmmm... The CES Lanbox live demo had a BlueOrb and Ive done a build with the Max Orb just to see if it will fit and yea, it "fits" but I wouldnt use it. The fit is too tight. I would use the Blue Orb, But yea, I agree that a lower profile cooler is better. +1 for the Zalman.

sticking up for your company i see. j/k, well, thats the main point yes you could insert the blueorb, but problem you wouldnt able to use that HS to its full potential and it dont pull enough air towards the cpu due to the low profile and it will also obstruct a great deal of space that ventilation would be able to use without the Blueorb...

ps. pette pass me the link of that CES Lanbox Demo with Blueorb, i'm curious on how they tuck it in there...

Well bought the Zalman it was expesive but I also bought the QQ6600 and that fan/heat sink is HUGE so I know I made the right pick cause I don't like annnnnnything in my case to touch eachother or bruch even close to eachother. So here is the final...

QQ6600 Quadcore desktop chip
Bought it from my local computer store since CompUSA closed all of it's Saint Louis stores it's hard to find a local place with this and that. I went in during the back to school Missouri no tax weekend $319. They did not have one with the Go stepping but I am not going to be overclocking anyway. It feels good to suport a localy owned store with reasonable prices.

Thermaltake Lanbox case (with handel and clear windows)
$129 from buy dot.com free shipping and arived the next freaking day. The front fold down drive bay was busted on arival but Thermaltake is sending me the part RMA.

2 GIG Crucial DDR2 1066 memory (2x1gig sticks)
On sale $145 at Buy.com with a $30 rebate and another $30 off for opening a buy.com card

Mator 320 gig harddrive $60 bucks at Fry's at the time pricegrabbers lowest was $119

Zalman low profile fan/sink $36

Asus P5K-VM Motherboard $94 at ClubIT $106 (free shipping) and $10 rebate

Generic 60mm case fan for the optional 3rd fan hole to impove airflow $10

Ultra 500w Xconect PSU FREE! Radioshack had a $50 rebate and Ultra had a $50 one as well with free shipping. I guess they just wanted to borrow my money for 6-8 weeks?

Gonna use the onbaord video for a while teill I can afford a better card and PSU upgrade.

Sooooo how did I do? ANything you all would have done differntly? Now to read up on how to set timings and all that LOL it's been a long time since my last build but I think I can do it....but I know I will have more questions.

Thanks for the help all!

Great build there, man. I think a 8800GTS will fit in the Lanbox, if you re looking at a GPU in the future.

get some pics for us as well!
