Hmmm....cool story from my Intel experience....well....I went for years thinking that AMD was merely a generic version of Intel processors, rather than the David that thoroughly kicked Goliath's butt for nearly an entire decade...isn't that a hoot!

My dad's daily rig is a 533 PII he has had since 1997. He finally outgrew his 4 gig HDD, I bought him a 2gig Corsair flash drive for Dad's day...which will probably do him for a long time...though one of these days I hope to surprise him with a new rig. Pretty much all he does with it is type, email, his amateur radio contact record, and a couple of amateur radio websites.

Personally, I nearly have an aneurysm every time I get on it waiting for things to happen.

Obviously, I am an AMD kind of guy...but I figure my next processor will end up being a Core 2 Quad.

I'm assuming I'll need something before Phenom is ready and trustworthy.

Phenom is good but $$$ not money wise, yet when they probably send it out, the price will dropped drastically again...

about your Dad's rig, it sounds more the LONG OVERDUE... save some Mulaaaaah, you can build a decent P4 Mini Computer for less the $500, if all he do is email type, record contacts and Web browsing...

I have to disagree here. Although AMD has done quite well for itself in the past 10 years, I wouldn't say they were kicking Intel's butt the whole time. They did hit a couple of major milestones before Intel, like the 1 GHZ mark, and 64bit for the x86 platform. However Intel was defiantly on top there for a couple of years with the P4, until the A64 came out. The Athlon XP didn't even come close to the P4 in speed and performance. I do agree they have been on top more often in the past 10 years, but it hasn't been a total butt kicking. Intel fought back pretty hard.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome. I definitely like what I see...this is much like my favorite forums used to be like...and I miss it.

To be honest, I'm a little behind the times, still in Socket 939 and DDR era stuff, so it will take me a little work to get up to speed.

LOL...I'm having my first real rig problems in many months this weekend, I'll tell the story on another thread later, its pretty funny...now anyway. (I stopped to set Outlook Express up on another computer and saw the reply notice to this thread) It has been a long stressful weekend, and not over yet.
