The guy that did our sprint car parts used to tell us, "The cleanest and smoothest will get the best results". I can say for a fact, he knows what he's talking about. He has done some of the best street rods to come out of OKC. JM.02 Bailey.

I don't mean gouges in the case that actually go below the surface, I mean more of cosmetic scuffs and scrapes, not serious scratches. If anything does actually cause an indentation of some kind, I will be sure to sand it out before powdercoating. What do you think about powdercoating over the brushed aluminum look? Someone else said they did it on a Lian Li case and it turned out fine without any sanding... :dontknow:
Yep, if you do the brushed aluminum, it will actually show through the powder. Well, depends kind of on the powder as to how it shows. If you go with the ultra gloss black, or any black it will not show as much as using a lighter color.

I plan on going with a dark gray color with glossy finish. When I went to the powdercoat shop to get an estimate, the guy mumbled about possibly having to sand it, then decided it would be ok. I'll probably go over it with some 800 grit before I take it in anyway...

Going to have to sand it
Sorry, but that just strikes me as damn funny!!! The reason? Because any good powder coating shop has to put a real nasty anti oxidant agent on aluminum and scrub the hell out of it with pretty rough brillo pads to get any and all grease, detergents, and film off of the surface or the damn powder coat will not last!!!!

Hence the funny part, if the shop is prepping it correctly with the anti oxidant, and the brillo pad, they would not have to do any sanding

I hope that this is an upstanding coating shop, because from the sounds of it, they just want to rush it in, get it done, and get paid!!!!!

Thanks for the tip. My brother got a small part powdercoated for his rifle from this place and he seemed happy with it. There aren't any other powdercoating services nearby that I know of, but I'll hunt around and see what I can find and get a second opinion. I was only at this place for a couple minutes just to get an idea of what colors they had, what types of finish they could do, and approximately how much it would cost. He took the case and weighed it and said they could do it for like $25 - $30.

Man, that seeeeeems real cheap!!!! Most full size cases with just plain powder is around $50 to $75. Hell the chemicals for the anti oxidant are more than likely $8 to $12. Depending on the powder used, it can run around $20 to $80 per pound.

Yeah, that's what I thought too, I expected it to be around the $50 - $75 mark too. This is just the exterior of the case though, not any of the inside, so maybe that makes a difference? :dontknow:
