Once the drives are mounted, it realy is a ridgid structure all by it self. The cage is .055 thick perforated stainless steel. The hinge pin is a 1/8" dia 7018 welding rod. When it is in place the stainless sits on the aluminum rails, you have to lift it slightly to swivel it out. There will be 1/4" wide foam weather stripping on the interior rails, and on the outer portion of the cage so when the cover is put on, the cage will be sandwiched between foam.
The bottom of the case has been drilled to allow more air to come up through the drives (more on that later).

Oh nice, good call on the foam! I guess I'd like to see more pictures of how you have it mounted on the aluminum "rails"...

I know it been forever on this project. I wish to hillery i had a spare case before i started this "minor modification". Spent most of this weekend straightening a bent trailer frame for a neighbor. Although i did get some time in on the case today. pics soon. ST!X not shure which bottom hole yur refering to since there about 50 holes in the bottom that weren't there when i started LOL. One thing leads to another thats how senility works.

For referance the rabbit in the last two pics is 5&5/8" tall. The case is now 3" taller and with the fan & filter bay installed it's 3" wider. Pic 7 shows the first part of the drive bay ducting sitting in place but not installed. I need to finish the outside and paint before any of the rest of the duct work can be installed. Otherwise cleaning the inside well would be impossible. Yes there will be 1 more 120mm fan installed. The place i get my parts only had four in stock.

@ gv the best pics of the rails the drive bay will be sitting on are 7 & 9

@ ST!X now which hole was it you were refering to?

The sheet metal under the mobo has been opened up for the CPU, northbridge & southbridge chips

AAHHH! Get 'dat waskiwy wabbit!!! I don't wike da way it's wookin' at me in 'dat wast picture.....

And damn, that's a lot of fans! :laugh

That definitely clears up the drive cage thing much better. I thought it swung out the opposite way that it does, I think that's where I was getting confused. Is there enough room for the end of the HDD installed in the cage to swing past the edge of the motherboard tray?

Wink Re: How Senility Works

There is plenty of room from the mobo to swing in & out because the drive hinge pin is all the way at the back of the drives & out to the side of the case. I'll take better pics with the drives mounted as soon asi get the case painted & cleaned out. the one thing i'm a little worried about is the stiffness of the sata data cables, i was hoping to be able to hot swap a bad drive out. At the moment i'm concerned the data cables will try to unplug themselves when i swing the drives out. Have not tested this yet but i would buy more flexible cables if i knew where to get them.

The fans will be pulling air through a 14 x 20 filter then pressurizing the case slightly (5) 120 mm pushing air in (1) 120 & (2) 90 mm pulling air out. I know this goes against the grain here....from what i've read, but that makes absolutely no sense to me. My thinking is if there is a negative pressure on the case, all it does is make absolutely certian you will be pulling dirty air through your optical drives. No advantage there that i can see. Hey i could be wrong.......no virgin there........ if so then school me.

There is a lot of disagreement about what type of case airflow to have. Personally, I like the idea of having a balanced intake and exhaust airflow setup.

As for your SATA cable issue, you aren't going to find anything that exceptionally more flexible than the average SATA cable. I would find something a little longer and coil up a little at the edge of the mobo tray to un-roll when the HDD cage is swung open.

BTW, this is what I see in my dreams (nightmares) now.... THANKS
