Unless you really want or need to take detailed macros, that lens you were looking at (18-55mm) should be a good choice. Captain Crunch or Manta could tell you better, as they know much more about cameras than i do

Nate I must say I like these much better than the last batch.......You really filled the frame well with these. I really like the first and last shots very nice man . Good job.

Wow, are those flowers naturally that colorful and thick or did you do some enhancements in Photoshop?
