I also wondered about that other shadow? Even if it was Nate (Yellow)?

The tree makes good sense. There sure as hell is something and I agree it can be a distraction. Overall the picture looks like it could be one of those Hallmark pictures used with a "Missing You" or "Life is lonely without you" pictures.

OK, now we need Nate to explain the picture.

Those are some great shots, nothing to criticize about on any of them... I have quite a few shots of my own, heres a few...

the full size pictures are obviously much better but these are untouched other then the resizing. All 3 taken on the same trip to Apalachicola, FL, the first is my daughter, she was about 3 in that pic.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

OK, the bench picture... It's the Pacific Ocean taken at sunset. That soft shadow to the right of the bench is a tree. The two sharper shadows to the left are other people walking around... dang tourists!

And thank you everybody, I really like the support and suggestions!

LOL! Yes, we built it! I of course did not go off it because:

1. I'm a wimp
2. I'm the one taking the photos!

Yep, that's me friend Eli, he is pretty good at mountain biking... here is my other friend checking out the jump... take note of the sticker on his bike :

Those are all very nice pictures indeed! That last one of the mountain biker has a nice subtle, yet noticeable depth of field effect

Thanks! That's what makes it "pop" I think... it really helps to have a huge aperture like f/1.8, it makes it easy to create good DOF.

Uh, Yellow, think about what you just said.

In the image of your friend going off the ramp your friend is sharp and clear as is the background trees as well as the foreground. The F Stop was likely quite high, especially considering ambient light. Had the F Stop (apeture setting) been low like about 1.8 your friend would have been sharp and clear with the background and foreground out of focus.

This is an example of an open wide F Stop:

The green foliage behind the subject is a blur, well out of focus. This is an example of a low F Stop resulting in a very narrow depth of field. The higher the F Stop the greater (wider) the DOF.

Also remember your DOF is based on more than just your F Stop.

Ron
