I could be wrong, but I would venture a guess that most people who download their software (legally) do it directly from the software developer's site, and not a third-party e-tailer.

Why the downloads cost more, I can only surmise. It likely has to do with bulk sales, which the software company can sell to Newegg in hardcopies and offer a discount. Contrast that with download sales, which aren't sold in bulk, but on a pay-per-download basis.

FWIW, using one of the examples above, Newegg's hard copy and digital download are both cheaper than ClubIT's hard copy:

TurboTax Hardcopy @ Newegg - $39.79 shipped
TurboTax Download @ Newegg - $44.99

TurbTax Hardcopy @ ClubIT (download not available) - $$49.98 shipped

TurboTax Hardcopy @ TurboTax.com - $51.84 shipped/taxed
TurboTax Download @ TurboTax.com - $47.65

I whole heartedly agree. Newegg is guilty of this, and it does tend to piss me off. But then again, this is a capitalistic country we live in, so as much as it sucks, Newegg can sell their products however they want, at the cost of losing potential customers in the process.

Personally, I find Newegg to be my number one place for all my computing needs. If I need to have the latest tech (which is extremely rare), I'll wait a few months until prices stabilize, or at the very least, I'll get it somewhere else that doesn't price gouge if I need the tech right now.

Heh, I think you mean Zip. Newegg's search filters are just about the best in the business.

I've yet to be let down by the Egg. The price fluctuations can be aggravating at times, but they've always settled down after a short while, which I'm
willing to wait if I really want the part(s).

That was just an example that he was using :)

As for me. I won't be scampering off because a download version is being sold for a bit more. Every customer has the chance to see what the costs are and make a decision based on that. In the end, we truly don't know the reason until they respond and tell us why. And frankly it doesn't matter to me. If I am looking for DL version I am going to look around for the best price for that; If I don't care if it is retail or DL then I am going to look around for the best price in general.

As far as I'm concerned, a good consumer is going to check multiple respectable sites to find the best deal for most purchases.

I hear ya. My point being, NE is starting to show a trend towards moving away from the highly customer oriented business they have been over my last four+ years of dealing with them and becoming more focused on how much money they can make. NewEgg, in 2002-2003, wasn't like that. In 2004-2006, they were at the top of their game, 2007 started the price focusing I'm talking about. So who knows where my beloved NE will be by 2009.

I honestly can't see moving completely away from newegg myself. IMO they still do it better then everyone else. I still price compare everything I buy, but 95% I go with newegg because of the selection and prices. Even though some items maybe cheaper elsewhere, between shipping and prices differences, between multiple items, Newegg usually averages out to be cheaper. There are still some specialty items that Newegg just doesn't carry in those cases I will go with an etailer that does carry them.

I seem to remember the eVGA 780i being like $350 on newegg at launch while everyone else had it for $250.

Also, they're shipping in some cases has been less than satisfactory. I'll provide pics of what I mean when I get home.
