Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear. We rent a DVR/cable box from Comcast for about $5 a month. When ours failed they had to send a guy to check out everything, and he swapped out the box with a new one. Viola - everything worked but we lost the 40+ hours of stuff we had recorded on the old box.

It's like the music and gaming industries - I'm sure they're worried about people ripping them off, but they end up treating their good customers like criminals.

Giving the phone number of direct TVs support line to "Anonymous" aka 4Chan, should take care of them

Ok, so today we finally made the switch to cable........but wait, the story takes a funny twist.

So I call DirecTV this afternoon to cancel our service, and am told that since they sent me a replacement receiver for the one they said was broken, but wasn't, that it automatically entered us into a new one year contract, and that if we terminated our service, we'd be subject to a $299 charge.

I explained the situation, and reminded the tech that we did not agree to any contract, that I had told them it was the dish and not the receiver.....but he told me it didn't matter.....and there was nothing he could do about it.

I asked to speak to a supervisor, and was put on hold, for 25 minutes. Finally, a conflict resolution specialist answered the phone and spent 10 minutes trying to talk me out of disconnecting, offering to waive the $80 service fee to fix our problem, offering us 3 months of premium channels for free......I asked the lady REPEATEDLY to stop, and just disconnect our service.

Finally she agreed to disconnect our service, but the proceeded to tell me we had 2 months credit (Jaemie pays all our bills a few months in advance), and that she needed to verify all of our contact information and email address before she could disconnect us. I was extremely proud of myself for keeping my cool and letting her play her game......slowly going over all of our information.....she finally ended the conversation by telling me she regretted losing us as a customer, and hoped that we would consider them when we weren't happy with cable.

Damn I was thinking of switching from cable when we moved. I'm glad I stuck with them now.

That sounds like a company desperate to keep customers. If I were you I'd send your email summary right to the BBB and copy the company's IR department.
