Our house runs Dish Network for my parent's taiwan TV channels, but we use Cablevision's Optimum Digital. They the only company i know that doesn't charge extra for HD service as oppose to normal digital, + their DVR is free too.

Capper ... make that two customers lost ... I won't be switching to them based on your story. Been considering a switch for a while and now would never do it for moral and support and boycott reasons.

Man, until we moved to Vegas, we'd had a good experience with DirecTV....its just been the last 3-4 yrs where we have had all kinds of issues.

After losing all my movies, trying to get the guy to understand it wasn't the receiver, then being treated like they were "doing me a favor" by waiving a $80 service call (while not refunding my PPV charges), just put me over the edge.

They always think the answer to bad customer service is giving you a month or two of free HBO (but never tell you after the free month you have to call and cancel or you get charged)....when all you want is for issues to be solved.

As I told the guy last night, I'll never recommend DirecTV to another living soul.

As to football season, that ones gonna be tough....but we have quite a few Steeler bars here in town, so I can head out and see the games for free, instead of dropping another $250 in DirecTVs pocket.

My father in law had them for 1 year (the contract time) after which he switched back to the local cable company (Cox) since he had nothing but problems with DirecTV since day 1. It would be fixed for a week or two then come back. Then other problems. He finally got sick of it and switched back... he ended up spending more on the installation, service fees, and everything else when he thought he would be saving money.
Locally, Cox is the best thing around for cable and internet, and they have damn good service. Their service is never out, I think I have seen maybe 3 outages for 1-2 hours in the 7 years I have had them here (minus hurricane time when it is expected).

I'm a bit confused on the receiver part. You bought the thing for $400 at best buy (which already sounds high enough), and then direct TV said you only paid "half" of it, and then they charge you a monthly rental fee? Was it a direct TV only receiver? I know I've seen cable receivers for sale on ebay and stuff, so that doesn't make much sense

I would be contacting them for a full refund in this case, and if they did not return the hardware take them to court.

Yeah, it was a confusing deal....evidently you pay the $400 (They say the DVR is worth $750-800), and if you ever leave, you have to give it up....its in the small print.

let me guess, the small print is inside the box which can only be seen once opened... yet after it is opened it cannot be returned except to exchange a defective unit for a good unit... so either way you're screwed and they got your $$$

yeah basically.....it was a "*" on the label, in small print....then you had to look somewhere else to see the deal.

To me, it was misleading to "Sell" the DVR on the shelf at Best Buy......why not rent it out, or just sell it, but to charge $400 for it, then to charge a monthlyt fee and demand it be returned if the service is discontinued is BS.

Do you loose the $400?
