I keep a free software list (like One4ya'a links O'plenty) elsewhere. Here's the category from it. I don't know how up to date the links are, as I started the list before my dad got sick; and haven't checked it due to my back being bad.

CD - DVD Burning Software - MUSIC PLAYER

CDBurnerXP Free CD/DVD Writing Utility
DeepBurner - Powerful CD and DVD Burning Package. Also see DeepRipper - Powerful AudioCD Ripping Utility on the same page.
Quick Menu Builder - This is a utility to help you make interactive menus for CD's. You will need a photo program from what I've read. There is a screenshot here
VLC Media Player - cross-platform media player and streaming server

K3b is my favorite Linux CD/DVD writer. It's really similar to Adaptec's older versions of Easy CD Creator, except somebody pumped some elephant steroids into its rear.

I use Nero (7 I believe?) in Windows. It's a bit simplistic and bloated for my preference, but it does the job. I've never found anything free for Windows that's as nice as it (shoot, I haven't even gotten any of those dang freeware DVD burners to even work except DVDShrink).

Well, I can tell I've been gone for a while...

I haven't actually had time to look at these options very closely what with Christmas about to slap me upside the head (not prepared this year like I usually am). I've been trying to get my wife's computer worked out, and finish tweaking a computer that's a Christmas gift, plus working.

I want to thank polobunny and all you other guys for all your help and suggestions! I will have to take a look at these things after all the rush, rush is done.

Talking Re: Need software for a DVD writer

I just got my computer hooked back up (I was working on a comp that's gonna be a gift), and I noticed that the new DVD-RAM has given my Nero software the abilty to burn DVDs! Where there were none before, I now have two tabs at the top of the Nero StartSmart screen - one for CDs, and one for DVDs, allowing me to burn and copy DVD discs.

So...Now I don't need to get new software for the thing!

Of course, I found this out after I discovered I had both my opticals configured as master drives (and so windows did not see them). So a switch of a jumper fixed that, and now I'm good to go!
