I'm not sure about Linux or other versions of Windows though.
Yes it was sort of mentioned already so I didn't bring it up. If your MoBo Supports SLI you can use two different video cards and run them as stand alone.

For Example I ran a 7900GT and a 7600 GT in the same computer as stand alone, and the computer would recognize up to 4 monitors. This works in both XP and Linux. IMHO more then 4 monitors is useless unless your playing a flight simulator or running multiple computers remotely.

Yeah, all you do is never check the SLI option in nVidia settings and not use the bridge.

what would be the reason for running 4 monitors off one computer, like in that flicht simulator for instance?

In a flight simulator you have several different views. If you have say 4 monitors you can see 4 different views at the same time, instead of switching views while your trying to fly. It gives you more of a cockpit feel.

I have seen this one in MaximumPC Magazine and on many different websites.

^^^ Imagine the electricity bill running so many CRT's.

Photo/video editing is another good example of running multiple monitors, have the source/output videos on separate monitors main app + any extra dialogs on another monitor.

You don't necessarily have to have an SLI motherboard (or CrossFire). If you have a PCI graphics card laying around, that'll work too (you could try it in addition to your two cards in the PCI-E slots too.. if you do, let us know of it works )

I would suggest scouting garage sales or used computer stores and buying cheap $5-$10 PCI video cards.

I recently sold an old ATI card at a garage sale.
