Linux has two good methods. The one Apple would want to use in about 98% safe. I suspect thats why they never bothered because they didn't want to field calls. The one that 100% safe sits in a legal grey area (captive method). It's pretty legal if you don't charge for it - but of course, Apple would want to charge.

Still, they should at least give folks the option. I'm sure there are tools if you are a UNIX guru and drop to the CLI.

It's probably a philosophical thing with them.

I actually have a 40 Gig usb hard Disk Drive that pulls power from the usb port. It transfers data at exceptional rates and doesnt take more then 2 minutes to transfer large files to it. Large files being 2GB or larger. I have about 17 gigabytes free but it Did not take long to copy my whole World of Warcraft directory to the drive, The directory is about 11 Gigabytes. I would say about 5 minutes tops.

have u tried tiger direct they have several usb external hard drives . I dont know if they have anything as big as a terabyte but you can check go to www. tigerdirect.com

I Have an Elements (powered By Western Digital) 250GB External usb2.0 and it works awesomely transfer's everything really fast i can transfer a whole movie in under a min (6-900mb) and best of all it wasabout 70.00

I'd buy an OEM drive, then an external enclosure, assemble and voila', instant
external HDD to your specifications. I have 5, and love 'em (not in a really weird way though).
