You're right that it can be done read-only, such as a live CD and an e-mail client that doesn't save your messages after you read them, but I've got this drive setup to store the entire e-mail client with my mailbox and I've configured Slax to automatically save my LiveCD sessions to the disk, so it's just like a real OS.
