Diskpart to extend a volume can only extend into unpartitioned space. If you have a fully partitioned disk, extending would actually mean breaking down current partition walls and moving into that prior space. That's where data is usually lost.

Did you use DiskPart on a drive with unallocated space or move partition walls around and get to keep all the data contained within?
