Wow, big monitor! I'm still on a 19in. widescreen. Looks really bright. Still looks like a great monitor though!

At first the whole display looks sorta washed out, guess I have to tweak the monitor settings tomorrow. So far I only used it for CAD and internet browsing, gonna try watching a dvd movie later on. Oh I am using the D-Sub cable as the lappy doesn't have the DVI output like the desktop, perhaps I get better display results via the DVI output.

The monitor doesn't support 1600x1200. Are you sure you don't mean 1680x1050?
Either way, you should adjust it to the latest to get the clearest picture.

Yes, check the resolution information in your monitor menu to see if it's at 1600x1200 however. It should normally default to the closest resolution it supports.

Edit: Besides setting a 4:3 resolution on a widescreen monitor will make it look blurry.

I checked the refresh rate on the laptop settings and it's stuck at 60 hertz.

The natiive resolution for the monitor (Acer AL2216W8D) is 1680 X 1050 and that is the resolution it should be run at. Using a resolution other that the native resolution will render a fuzzy or poor looking image.

Now if your graphics card does not support a 1680 X 1050 resolution you have a problem. The issue is not the monitor but having a Display Adapter to support it.

Quote:
22" wide-screen TFT LCD, 1680 x 1050 native resolution, 700:1 contrast ratio, 170°/160° horizontal/vertical viewing angles, VGA and DVI-D connectors, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 5ms response time, black color
The issue here is not the 60Hz refresh which is for the better part not a problem. The issue is being able to set your graphics for the native resolution of the monitor.

That is my guess.

Ron

Start->Run, type "regedit". Press enter.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\VIDEO\{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}\0000
where the big series of X is your display adapter. You might have more than one under VIDEO, in which case you need to modify the good one.
Double click DefaultSettings.XResolution to edit it, tick the Decimal button and enter "1680" without the quotes.
Double click DefaultSettings.YResolution to edit it, tick the Decimal button once again and enter "1050" without the quotes.

Close regedit and restart your computer.
To see which one of the few entries you might find under VIDEO is the best, search for your current set resolution. If you see that DefaultSettings.XResolution and DefaultSettings.YResolution are set respectively to something like 800 and 600, you know this is not the good entry.

If your screen turns black once you boot back into windows, your display adapter probably can't do it, even when forced. In this case reboot in safe mode and change those values back to what they were before.

Good luck.

Should you decide to try and force the GPU with a registry edit it may be wise to backup the portion of the registry you are editing:

Quote:
This method is preferred if you're making changes to a specific key/area of the registry. To backup a selected branch/key in the registry, try this:
  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
  • Locate and then click the key that contains the value that you want to edit
  • On the File menu, click Export.
  • In the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg)
  • In the File name box, type a file name, and then click Save.
What you would be doing is navigating using regedit to HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. Expanding System click and hilight CurrentControlSet then click File and choose Export. Give the file a name like REG BU CurrentControl (or whatever works for you) and save the file to the desktop. Then if things do go to hell just boot in safe mode and double click the saved file. It will automatically restore the registry.

Ron

Good idea there. However he could only export the VIDEO section, instead of the whole HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. This would take less time, and I think it would be unecessary to backup the whole thing for only changing 2 values. ;)
