Patience pays off - after letting it try to start in safe mode for two hours it finally kicked in. I was able to go to the C:\properties\security\advanced and remove many of the other accounts (past admins I had set up but forgotten the login for). Now I'm down to two: me as creator/owner and system.

I've given myself as administrator full control but it doesn't seem to stick.

Now I get C:\ not accessible.

I do have access do the D:\ drive, which is an HP installed recovery partition.

Sorry to be a pest, but any more thoughts?

Thanks to hitman for extra help but haven't quite gone that route yet

F11 now brings me to the Bios. No restoring anymore. I'm thinking I need to set up a user with full control and take control of all the C files. I'll try that tomorrow when i have time.

lets see... HP... I think the restore was F12 or F2..... F11 (or sometimes Delete) is BIOS...
what model of HP is this so we can look up more info on it?

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Yes, restore was F11. I tried that it got a "WAIT" screen for nearly 2 hours with NO activity on the HD. Not sure what it was supposed to do but it didn't work so I restarted. Now F11 brings me to the BIOS (after asking for a password, which I must have set up in the frenzy of activity yesterday afternoon/evening).

I think if I set up a user, rather than just a Creator/Owner and System, then I'll be able to access the C drive again. I do have access to the D drive (which is just the internal partition holding the recovery stuff).

I won't be able to work on it until tomorrow evening. I'll give it a try and (I suspect) be back with more questions. For now I'm happy that it is regularly booting into XP home, even if I can't do anything in there. It is progress, even if only a baby step.

sometimes you can try to login with the username Administrator with that password and see if that works for you....

I think regular login I only get one option, which is me as administrator.

Safe mode has me and Administrator.

But as old as I am I might be mis-remembering it. I'll try a couple things when I have time to sit down and deal with it.

ITMT thanks to all for your continued help. This **** really appreciates it!

thanks OMG - I want to see what I can do with it - perhaps overly optimistic but being able to regularly reboot and login feels like a major victory. Not quite done yet but on the road.

To continue Joker's question - what exactly are you doing "on" your son's PC? Sounds kinda like a little too much PC-love?
