Default Re: Windows XP SP3 hits Windows Update

Using the link in the other thread I posted, I had already installed it on 2 computers. WU already sees SP3 installed and no other updates. so the previous link I posted should be almost the same version as whats on WU now

That's exact.

Wow, I'm not sure why, but I just rechecked my tcpip.sys because I was getting craptacular speeds and now it seems it got changed, version got updated to 5.1.2600.5512 (SP3). 5.1.2600.2180 was SP2 build... :S
Repatching! @__@

Have you already updated your XP SP2 system to IE7 or a beta version of IE8? You need to uninstall IE7 or IE8 beta before you install SP3 (SP3 includes IE6) and reinstall your choice of IE7 or IE8 beta after updating to SP3. Need to uninstall IE7? See KB 927177 for help.
Found out the answer to my own question (and see that the linked article has been updated). Apparently, to maintain the option of uninstalling IE7 and reverting back to IE6, you'll first have to uninstall IE7 before installing SP3, and then reinstall IE7.

Otherwise, if you're running SP2 w/ IE7, you can upgrade to SP3 just fine, you just lose the option of reverting back to IE6.

I have already updated to SP3 on multiple computers and have not had to remove IE7 on any of them. Er wait... this only pertains to IE7 BETA... nevermind, I had regular versions installed.

I think the problem resides in removing IE7 after installing SP3 screwbie. You can't remove it normally if you installed it before SP3.

Correct. If you want the option of uninstalling IE7 and going back to IE6, you MUST first uninstall IE7 before updating to SP3. If you don't, you're effectively married to IE7.

Moot point for alternative browser (Firefox, Opera, etc) and/or IE7 users.
