IDE drives such as your optical drive are compatible with about 99.9% of motherboards these days. Swap the optical drive from another PC before you spend some money on a new HDD.

hey thanks yuri! good call on the optical drive, the ubuntu will install now! sweet! i'll try installing xp later! thanks for the help(hopefully xp will work as well)
