Retail prices are stratospheric, but OEM pricing is much more down to earth:

Home Basic OEM - $105 shipped
Home Premium OEM - $125 shipped
Vista Ultimate OEM - $205

Premium's going to be the bread and butter for most enthusiasts, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the OEM version settle closer to $100 after the dust settles.

Yep. When DirectX10 starts to really hit the scene and there are 1-2 'must-have' titles available, as well as bugs discovered and worked out, it will be easier to make that recommendation. Otherwise, there's not a compelling reason to recommend upgrading over XP just yet. Brand new builds are a different story though, and it's a tossup between XP w/ upgrade coupon, or just jumping ahead right off the bat. User preference.

I'm gonna wait until it's all clear. I wanted to be one of the early birds, but without a DX10 card, screw it.

Also recommended is the 10 reasons NOT to switch to Vista in February's MaxPC!

Josh (Yuri) throws that tidbit out quite often (usually in support of calling Vista a 'flop'), and that's the blurb on the cover, but it's a tad misleading. The actual article title is 10 Reasons You Don't Need Vista Today. Keyword there being 'today', and they go on to explain in the opening why they "have some compelling arguments for waiting a few months before you upgrade," which is quite a bit different the initial connotation.

Lol. I know what it really meant... it's a pretty good article; it makes sense. I'm still gonna go try to snag that free copy of Vista from an OEM... Lol.

I kinda had high hopes for Vista...Until I saw longhorn concept videos from 2003. These videos, longhorn ran faster, and had more features then vista could dream of. Vista is more and more looking like a stop gap solution.

Talking about subscriptions... I need to renew... Do those magazine sites that have 3 years for like $12 work? It's a pretty good deal. Lol.
