here is a story for you Joker:

Why I quit: kernel developer Con Kolivas

one line really hit it home for me:

Quote:
If there is any one big problem with kernel development and Linux it is the complete disconnection of the development process from normal users. You know, the ones who constitute 99.9% of the Linux user base.

it is far from dead... just a majority of the high level programmers all work for one of the major corporations (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Cicso) and their outlook is to support and build it for servers with the desktop usage as an afterthought.
Until one of the major projects drops this predisposition, the end user will suffer. I have been looking into Syllable that uses the AtheOS base and so far looks pretty decent as it is programmed for the end user and desktops, although they do have a server setup, that is the afterthought in their situation. It still has a long way to go but has a lot more promise than the current linux distros out there today.

That explained why the server market is so strong. Unfortunately there's not much incentive to develop for the desktop since there's not much in it for big companies. < They would have to switch all the employee computers to linux and then teach the idiots like me how to use it.

Thats part of the problem... the corporate linux programmers are preventing the desktop enhancements from really taking off. those that are towards the top pf the heap that decide what is and is not included all aim for the server side. I am just waiting for someone to really kick it in gear and separate linux in 2.. desktop and server. they can share info back and forth but the desktop version can remove unneeded junk that is only used on the server side...

Just waiting for that day

it is already under way with several distros.... Ubuntu has been trying to go that route and has enough programmers now that they can concentrate primarily on the desktop... I am just waiting for some official separation.

as for XP?

Quote:
Microsoft will now make Windows XP Home available for what it calls ultra-low-cost PCs (ULPCs) until June 30, 2010 or one year after the release of the next version of Windows; whichever is later.
So this means no more XP Pro...
