Default Re: When do you think Vista will be as stable as X

based on MS history, I would say around 2009 when Vienna is about to be released.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Give the Vendors about 6 months to complete the drivers. My laptop has been extremely stable since the RTM release in November.

My Deskptop is stable save for a needed upgrade for the video card so the power save mode works the way it should, otherwise I have had no problems at all with it.

Give me about 3 weeks of abusing it at work in a real time enviornment to give a better idea of stability.

FWIW, my wife never once complained about Vista when she sat at the computer. She just said "hey you changed it" and found what she needed!

I think there is a lot of mis information out there abilty the stability of Vista. Vista is a well written OS, probably the best release OS that MS has ever done. The issues in Vista are more from hardware makers not getting their drivers done on time.

If you have hardware from say intel or ATI then your system was pretty much set out of the box with Vista. By now however most vendors have their dirvers fixed, if they dont yet have drivers that work I would be looking for new hardware to by since support would seem to be an issue.

Vista is ready for full use now if your hardware has support.

Hardware wise? Yes. Software wise? Not so much. A majority of my programs work flawlessly in vista, but some either run horribly, not at all or just act kind of funky. And gaming is not up to par with vista yet, some glitches, some crashes, and of course a FPS drop in some games, sometimes as significant as 30 FPS from what I've been told. So as far as the gaming community is involved, stay away from vista for a good while (3-4 months), and the enthusiast crowd has no reason to upgrade yet either.

But I jumped on the bandwagon anyways!

I disagree with you there. That seems to be the most prominent problem, actually. It was not written well, and neither were all of the features thought out very well. Hence, the ridiculous system requirements and thousands of bugs (non-driver-related ones). It might be ok with a service pack or two, but I disagree over the issue of whether it's one of the best versions of Windows or not. It may not be on the same level as WinMe, but by golly, it's trying

>_> Have you tried it yet? I've only hit one bug, and that was an issue with the installer. Take away aero and it doesn't really have a high demand either. Granted elderly PCs should have issues running vista, most modern PC's should run vista well. The sig in my rig runs vista extremely well, and I can still play games like CoH at 1280x1024 at medium/low settings.

EDIT - Now that I think about it, some people were complaining that explorer would reopen after closing. But other than that and a few other isolated cases, Vista has been very reliable.

Yes, I've used it a lot. There're quite a few recursive dialogs, especially in the security wizards, among other things.

Edited previous post to make more sense :P

What do you mean by recursive dialogs?

By recursive dialogs, I mean message dialogs that warn you of a potential problem and/or ask you what to do, and they popup again over and over again after you go through the asinine process, and never do anything at all except force you to end the task of the program you wanted to run.

wait, You mean the cancel or allow and crap? You can turn that off, its called UAC. Just go to control panel > User accounts and find the option near the botton about adjusting User Account Control settings. On the next screen, make sure the box is unchecked about using user account control settings and then hit next, then reboot. After this I just turn off the security center all together plus the notification about security threats in the tray. I can help people with this more when I'm at my house, but I'm at work ATM. As far as the process for the program crashing and such, I've only had older software cause problems.
