I have to throw in my own two cents on the security/firewall/virus discussion.

1. I ran either Norton or Mcafee for about 10 years on multiple home computers connected with and without routers and never once in all that time was there ever a virus notification on any of the machines. I personally think it was huge waste of money and effort to keep them up to date and uninstalled when they screwed up and even reinstalling Windows because of them numerous times (especially from Mcafee).

I think my virus protection all those years was due to a few simple rules. No pop-ups......no Outlook.........no Hotmail......and the only attachments that could be opened were pictures. Those rules kept me much safer that any crap virus scanning.

2. I also ran many combinations of software and hardware firewalls. And I have to agree that you can definitely see the performance hit from the software firewalls that I have used. I can also see the difference between using the XP firewall and not using it. I suppose that one is a matter of opinion. But percepttion is reality.

3. So currently I have 3 machines on a home network with 2 wireless routers that both have hardware firewalls. I have no virus protection on any of the machines. There are also no software firewalls on any of them. So I thought I'd click that link and see what shields up said. I find it pretty ammusing. Hope you do too.

So, just like in real life.........your behavior has more to do with your safety than the 7 foot gorrila that you hired to protect you.
