Default Re: Old W2K trouble

The question is not are we paranoid - because we are, each & every one of us - but rather, are we paranoid enough?

Nothing was backed up on this system. I just went ahead and scrubbed. However, the gal who uses it stores everything off to floppy, so it might have been infected storage that led to the reinfestment in the first place (this is the 3rd time I've scrubbed this thing) but this last scrub was done without any contact with any possibly infected material coming into contact.

Jeez, almost sound like a Doc, huh?

No, I kept the system as clean as I know how while scrubbing and installing - and I am paranoid - but I still got the garbage as soon as I hooked into the 'net.

I'll try the messenger disable thing as soon as I get my mitts on it again later today or tomorrow, and keep you posted on progress.

I'm just wishing the gal had taken my first piece of advice when I first saw this goofy looking Dell, which was "First, find a big club and..."

>_> FTP port is 21, how are you using FTP if its blocked?

You know, I have a hardware firewall with pretty much every port open and have never had a problem.

Win2k gave me the exact same messages within 5 seconds of booting to the desktop with the net online. Going to start>>>run>>>services.msc>>>and disabling windows messenger fixed it all up

Only my ftp app is allowed to access the port, anything else that tries to access 21 and I'll know about it, even if I do a simple update on Firefox, firewall will block and alert me that the app changed and is trying to access the internet.

I wonder what MS was thinking when they designed this with no easy way to disable it.

I think ZoneAlarm works on 2K... pretty sure it does as that is what is on my 2K machine

also try this:

GRC*|*Shoot The Messenger**

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I have win2K on the lappy and never got this message. Installed 2x and access the net all the time, and not just from my house, from unprotected unfirewalled wireless connections as well.

Of course I alwaysd disable the messenger service, but it took me about 2 days to get around to it the first installation.

geez I'm lazy.
