| Kasperksy, in my opinion is THE best antivirus there is. If you don't have a hardware firewall in your router or in any other network hardware, then I recommend you run ZoneAlarm which is a software firewall. ![]() I Like Watercooling. D-Tek Fuzion, MCP655, MCR220 |

| Colonel Calamity | try Avira AntiVir its free and works very well, plus it is rated higher than pretty much all of the other AV programs.... also I would suggest a-squared, it scans for trojans, backdoor, some rootkits, and other nasties ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal. | Quote:
In the meantime, I'm with Panda in that this is one of those situations where I would recommend a fresh install. Depending on the particular malware(s) you picked up, it could have its hooks deep within your OS. Even if you can get your PC to appear clean, would you trust it enough to continue using your passwords for forums or other sites you may visit (such as online banking, Paypal, EBay, etc)? Kaspersky's a really good antivirus program that I have no hesitation in recommending, if you're willing to pay for it. Other worthy antivirus software includes NOD32, AntiVir, and AVG. Really though, any of them will do more than an adequate job if you practice safe computing habits. As far as what I personally use: AVG Free (antivirus) ZoneAlarm Free (firewall) A-Squared Free (antispyware, very occasional scans) Spybot Free (antispyware, very occasional scans) Adaware Free (antispyware, very occasional scans) F-Secure Blacklight Beta Free (anti-rootkit, extremely rare scans) Common Sense Computing Free (daily usage, )

| Colonel Calamity | I refuse to pay for another AV program. when the free ones do just as good if not better then the paid ones then I see no need to pay... I guess people pay for all that touchy feely good things like a big extensive GUI and other useless CPU cycle-stealing crap.. no thx... ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Well, I haven't opened it yet or anything... should I continue to use Avast? It did work damn well... - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 |

| Colonel Calamity | One problem with Avast is that it locks the proxy settings and uses them for its updates and other communications with their servers. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |

![]() Lol. Right now I'm still not running anything. I'm copying over my songs on my iPod... ![]() I think I'll still resort to Avast. The last free option on me is McAfee (my bro bought it). But that's crappier than Avast and I don't want a suite (too much resource hogging). - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64
