I've never gotten that option. I started a new game of HL the other day and now I can't play it because of their servers. I'am not a happy camper when I spend $50 and have to go thru this crap to play a game. I understand about their piracy issues but don't you think it should default to offline when the servers are down.

True, I don't know I wasn't given the option yesterday. I've always had it though.

Unplug your lan cable, and then start steam. It will then realize that you do not have an internet connection and state that it will be running in offline mode.
Once you start steam in the off line mode, just plug your internet cable back in and you will have internet, but steam will be running in off line mode. You can then play half life 2 or what ever you want to play from the steam console.

I know most people hate it, but I think Steam's great for the most part. But this is one thing that bothers me. In particular, it's very finicky about offline gaming. It raises the question of whether a game is worth $60 if you won't have reliable access to it while you're on the road.
