Jumping to another star is the same as jumping to a planet/asteroid... just make sure you have the needed research done or you will be left behind and won't be able to chase the enemy... I played on map that had 4 stars and 7-8 planets/asteroids per star, each enemy started in its own star system. I got the research early and got the jump on them before they could come after me.

I understand. What I was trying to convey was that I chose not to research that upgrade, since it would just add complication.
I'm on a 3-star map, with 10 players all mixed! 4 hours into it and I'm struggling to protect some of my asteroid/planets.

When this finishes I'll start with a map more like what you described, to give me plenty of time to research and build-up my empire before I make any contact with races.

Have any strategies that you'd like to share?
So far I realized that those Gauss canons suck, and I don't bother building colony ships. By the time I am strong enough to take-out the pirates surrounding most planets, I have my Colony/Destroyer built

Thats what I love about scouts... they are cheap and if you lose a few its no big deal, especially if you have the sensor research already done (one of the first I do)... the sensor keeps an eye on where they are traveling and when and how many units are in the area so you can plan how many battle units to send... I like to keep a colonizing ship one or two jumps away so once the units are done for and the planet is bombed, you can take over the planet and have a new one to build ships at to reinforce yourself again.
another thing I always do against AI is always have at least 2 or 3 ships near any colony, helps keep them from sending large forces to attack.

Instead of keeping ships at each colony, which uses-up fleet points and costs ALOT, I instead fill my Tactical slots with 1 repair station, and the rest Hangar Bays full of Bombers. Keep the hangars near the repair station and they last MUCH longer against a large invading force. Gives plenty of time for you to get your fleet to that location.
4+ Hanger bays with bombers can do a pretty good job of repelling a small-medium force on their own.

I like combining them, usually 2-3 bomber bays and 2-3 ships is enough to hold them off long enough for the rest of the fleet to arrive... and usually once they arrive they turn tail and run... remember to always target the capital ships first.

When starting a new game, always remember to never pick "SLOW" for game speed.. If planets are far apart, it will take literally 30 minutes real-time for your ships to phase jump from one to the other. Even when game speed is set to "NORMAL" it could take quite a while, if the planets are really far apart.

So far only playing TEC.. I want to win one game before trying the other races.

always set everything to fastest

and I just set mine to random since each of the races are similar enough... the research is a bit different between the 3 so that takes a bit getting used to. Overall I do prefer the TEC over the others..
