The wife was getting mad at me last night because it took 5 hours (timer when I won was 4:43) to beat the first real single player level with no pirates. With pirates it would have been much longer.
I think I got a good idea of the tech trees although still need to learn what the best route to get them researched is. Took me half the game to realize how to increase the unit cap, was stuck with 100 slots (with 1 capital ship taking 50 slots) and was getting my ass handed to me when I tried invading. Now I see where it is and to keep an eye on that. Once I had 3 capitals and at least 50 attack units (not slots) I went on a spree and cleared out a pirate base then slowly took over the other planets held by the other side one by one.
It has a steep learning curve that the tutorial really does not even scratch the surface but a few more single player games should help get me up to speed.

edit: I can see how this would be a perfect game for a weekend gaming marathon or put it on a laptop during a trip that is at least 4 hours.

yes SOSE is a massive game. When it takes 5 hours learning the game on one of the smallest possible games, you know it is big and it is deep. I bet once I get the hang of it, will still take at least 3 hours for the same map.

Anyone know how the game is online? I'm thinking about picking it up once I'm done building my PC. I'm a big fan of SupCom, and it does remind me of that in how large the battles are, but I wonder if this game is more 4x or RTS.

From what I hear it is also a massive game online as well. I am still picking up the basics so I will find out in a few days myself.

took me 9 hours to actually finish a game. 3v3 with 20 planets that were VERY far apart. it literally took my fleets at least 30 minutes to get from one planet to another.

whats everyones favorite faction right now? ive been playing as the TEC but im now trying out the advent. so far i would have to say i like the TEC better.

yeah so far TEC has been my fave but I haven't played the others very much so I will test them as I go. Just learned something about start jumping today after you get a certain research thing done... kinda neat... thought the CPU had skipped town although I knew there was a 4th star but no scouts could get to it... so I just pointed one to go to that star and it jumped to nearest star and jumped over... crazy

Played this for the first time this weekend. Put in at least 4 hours worth. Very immersive gameplay. I had some trouble with the interface though. It's tough to manage 6 planets, numerous asteroids, 4 fleets, and dozens of ships when playing on a med-large sized map. I haven't even gotten to the point of jumping to another star yet, as it will just add complication.

Overall though it's quite fun.
