| I played it at a buddies hosue the other day and it was pretty sweet. The weapons and gameplay style are pretty unique, and the graphics are fantastic. | Colonel Calamity | another thing that is nice is that you can take an Xbox 360 controller, plug it into a USB port on the PC and use it from the box, XP already has the drivers needed to use it ![]() ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | No Sanity, no problem. | I wrote a review (kind of larger) not long ago. First off, the graphics (they are gorgeous if you are wondering). Nice blooms, looks great on HD, shiny objects. This is the first game with the Unreal 3 Engine that I have gotten my hands on and it is the most beautiful game I have played thus far (on the 360 that is). It frightens me to think of what this beast would look like on a high end PC. As we all know, graphics don't make a game great (well... most of us). Game play is even more important. And GoW has it. The duck and cover concept has been used before in Kill.Switch but it has been refined and remapped. Pressing the A button will charge the character forward (holding it will sprint) at a near by broken down pillar or car, which he will turn his back to and slam into it (It looks painful, it sounds painful and I cringed when ever I did it). Then he can to either blind shoot (pull the right trigger), or look above the cover and take of aimed shots to pick of the advancing enemy's. If He is at the edge he has the option of rolling away from the pillar, or spinning to another cover point. Pressing A and Forward allows him to leap over the debris. Picking off the enemy's is fun, especially when there is a nice arsenal of weapons. Each character can hold four different slots of weapons. One slot is grenades, another is for a side arm (pistols) and the third and fourth hold main weapons. There are two different types of machine guns, two different pistols, a shotgun, a satellite weapon (reminiscent to the Ion Ray), a bow, sniper rifle and a grenade launcher. The primary machine gun has a chain saw at the end of it and if you get close enough to hit the melee button there is awesome enemy sawing animation (instant kill) I never get tired of. All though the weapons are all unique and useful in their own situations I would have loved to have a semi automatic rifle for the long distance enemies. Reloading is also an optional minigame. When you press the reload button a small bar slides across your ammo clip indicator. If you press the reload button again when the bar is in a small white box you will get a faster reload and a damage bonus on all the ammo in the clip that was replenished. Speaking of enemies, I found them a little disappointing. Although there are plenty to kill they aren't that varied. For the most part you are fighting the standard enemy foot solider, armed with a MG or Shotgun. Berserker's are a blast and Boomers are a pain in the ass (you will have to find out for yourself). They are smart enough to advance on you when appropriate, but they don't believe in retreating at all. In fact, at one point one of them leaped over the cover I was using, then leaped over the cover my friend was using, leaving us both confused as to why the heck he was running. An allied AI of ours eventually chainsawed him after they fired at each other on opposite sides of the same pillar. The friendly AI is about as competent as the enemy's. The shoot when they see a target, they attack when they can and thats about it for them. Basically, you are doing most of the killing. The occasional boss or mini boss battle spices things up a bit.My biggest quip with the AI is I never saw a single one throw a grenade. Fortunately, there is multilayer to get grenades thrown at you. The multilayer was an absolute blast. The entire game comes with it. Some weapons are tweaked for damage balance but thus far my friends and I haven't seen anything major. The entire game can also be played in a 2 player coop mode via split screen or XBL which is a godsend on the harder game modes. The single player is short however. Cooped on normal my friend and I beat it in 5 1/2 hours and he beat it alone in 6. On harder difficultly levels this time increases quite a bit thanks to having to manage cover and tactics much more. My final verdict? 96% (out of 100%) + Mind blowing graphics, full story coop, great multiplayer - Average AI, some so-so weapon choices, repetitive enemies Final Thought: If you have an a 360, this is a must have. | I guess that there is one draw back.... It doesn't last very long. I beat it rather fast. I was expecting it to take a while. ![]() |
