| Colonel Calamity | This is happening left and right on consoles as well. Its called a mod chip. It allows people to not only used illegal copied/burned CD/DVD/BluRay/whatever to be played on the system but also opens the door for cheats and hacks. On a PC it is usually just a software addition that allows cheats/hax but on the consoles it is hardware+software so it is much harder to detect. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! If you built a decent computer now at the cost of say a PS3 ($500), i can be pretty confident that you'll be able to keep using that computer to play any game released in the next 3 yrs. Top settings? ofcourse not, but you'll be able to run them at moderate settings that'll be more than enough. What game out besides Crysis requires heavy duty video cards right now? Heck you can even play crysis on low end cards (my laptop can run crysis at 800X600 with low/medium settings) | |

| um the 360's modchip's been hacked long time ago for online play. It utilizes a ghosting feature that'll make microsoft unable to detect it. The old Banned from Live doesn't occur anymore. I haven't heard anyone having problems going online with the 3-4 different Wii chips (again this isn't the place to discuss so i'm not gonna go into too much detail) but i assure you both systems have chips that are working just fine. The PS3's actually pretty ironic, there's actually no technical copyright protection per say on the games, if you had a bluray burner and did a direct copy of a game, you can boot it in the PS3. Just the concept of owning a BR burner right now as well as buying BR blanks pretty much defeat the cost imo. Could be i'm wrong, but i know on launch the underground scene was very excited about this news. Also its possible to Dump PS3 games completely, and the thing right now is to try to run them off a HD ala PSP's Mem Stick and not burn them onto BR disks. |

| I play games occasionally on my GameCube, but 9/10 times you'll catch me playing on my PC. With a PC, you tend to have more than 1 interface to choose from as well. For example on Age of Mythology, you can use either the keyboard or the mouse to issue commands. For most console games, there is only one type of controller (I say most cause the Nintendo Wii has games where you can choose from 4 different types of controllers.). Not to mention if you need help with a computer game, you can use the same equipment to access the web and search for help. All consoles require you to leave and go to a PC to get the help you need. ![]() |

I understand what you are saying. Generally on a console if the console or game isn't working then the system is pretty much useless. At least with a PC, if the game isn't working, everything else is. If the OS isn't working then you can at least boot from a Linux LiveCD and get access to the internet; or reinstall the OS and get your internet access and gaming access back. Not like the console. If the GPU goes out, its not like you can just take out a card and replace it. There are still plenty of hacks out there on consoles, but it still requires a hardware modification to enable them. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Consoles are far from a dying breed, theres a reason why consoles are selling so well, and thats because they are easy to setup, and cheap. garetjax, your argument about consoles being a money whole is kind of pointless, when you say you have to keep continually upgrading your PC to keep up. To be able to play 1920x1080 games at full resolution at 60FPS is not cheap on the PC, especially for games like Call of Duty 4. Your thinking to much on the short term, when developers develop for consoles, they only have one specific hardware configuration to develop for, which means they can realize optimize things that you couldn't on the PC. Someone in 2005, could have easily just spent $1000 upgrading their computer from when the 360 was released to now, when PCs have finally caught up. Not to mention when the inevitable happens, the PC industry takes a big leap, and you basically have to dump all of your old hardware, and start from scratch. Intel and AMD have done that a few times on us. Opteron 64 165--1.5GB DDR--ECS KA1 MVP(thanks HL!)--x1800GTO 256MB--Seagate 320GB SATA--Antec 550 Watt--Antec P180 |
