Yup I saw it a while ago too, and it always fascinated me, the idea of having a perfectly silent computer. :)

Not to mention the headaches if you have a few of those in the computer right next to you. Oh, and wouldn't it corrode the contacts and heatsinks anyway?

Not sure on the corrosion part, but I bet these would have to be certified by CARB to be sold in california Yearly inspections on your PCs to make sure they aren't making to much ozone :-P

Ozone will harm plastics and rubber compounds. Not solder connections.

I have one that is for a full sized office building ... it is ridiculous.

There was a bit of mildew smell on my wifeys gortex boots ... so I put them in a tub and "Ozoned" them for about an hour. The rubber completely deteriorated and the heal separated from the boot !!!

I do not know but if you have that much air going through such a restricted space My first bet on it is you are going to be cleaning the dust out of it every two weeks.

Spoken and tried by a true Tech Geek. Nothing like a little home experiment.

They have had lawsuits filed against them over health problems they cause by the ozone it produces

That is not quite exactly true. There was a case filed but the case that was the focus was filed by Sharper Image (Ionic Breeze) against Consumer Reports. I don't know of any other actual court cases that I can find documented where individuals have brought suit against Sharper Image the makers of Ionic Air. Not to say they don't exist just to say I can't find any actual tried and documented cases.

Air ioniser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just scroll down to Consumer Reports court case.

Additionally the link covers the differences between Ions versus Ozone. All devices that generate Ionized Air (Negative) are not necessarily a health hazard. Positive Ionized air can be and is a health hazard for many people.

Interesting point of useless trivia here. If you have ever been in the area of a lightning strike you have caught the odor of Ozone or if you have ever been around the close proximity of any high voltage testing where a corona was present you have smelled Ozone. Frequently in areas where severe thunder (& Lightning) storms have passed through it is not unusual to see people who suffer from asthma and similar respiratory problems to be going to hospitals.

We can't just lump apples and oranges here and get good results.

A solid state fan, one with no moving parts likely uses what we could call a High Voltage discharge to function. Charged plates make things happen. Should we worry about high voltage in close proximity to our delicate electronics in our computers? Personally (and just my thoughts) I see no reason to be overly concerned. We think nothing about placing CCFL tubes in our cases with small inverters driving them at relatively high voltages.

Ron
