I've always used paper towels and then a plastic food storage bag to make sure the surfaces are as clean as possible. I know paper towels probably aren't the best thing to use, but it's what's here.

Is there a better way to make sure that ALL of the old compound is removed?
Rub and rub again. Or get some ArticClean, it's wonderful stuff.

Honestly, I use old socks if i can't find any coffee filters. you might also consider some Arctic clean....I've found it to be a fantastic product that does a great job of cleaning up pretty much anything.
