By all means, lap to your hearts content. Just be sure you can afford to throw a brand new CPU out the window. I'm NOT saying this is what you'll end up doing, I just don't recommend it on a regular basis. If you were getting into phase change cooling setups and reaching for some very high overclocks, I could see lapping a CPU's IHS. At the level we normally run our overclocks, no reason for it except for your own enjoyment.

Halut, the second you said you took a dremel to yours was all the proof I needed to conclude that you should never try lapping anything ever again.

i felt an urge to mess around with the dremel and the 9500 actually id didnt realize i was actually destroying it... anyway i stopped and the HS is still usable...

If your not sure on your heatsink's contact, look it up on Frostytech. They review coolers and list the contact roughness and how good or bad it is. That should give you an idea of if you need to lap your cooler; more often then not theres no need.

Well, no way I'm lapping my new Swiftech Apogee GT. I have heard they are factory lapped up to 1200 grit.

The Apogees..you can't get a finer surface on those if you tried. Maybe with a laser...
