Not to go into the resume thing, but this was a huge project I was part of about 2 years ago. What started as a production QC turned into...something else. The tolerance on IHS's are really pretty good compared to older IHS units. Like Snell testing or something of that sort, units are pulled in the batch units and checked for tolerance. If one falls out of tolerance, the entire batch get new hats. But what was clear is that a certain degree of cupping is fine. A few make it through, but it's not as rampant as we'd think. If 1,000 units are within tolerance, about .03 of these are just slightly more cupped and just fall through the gaps.

They cup from more material being in the corners which tend not to shrink as much as the thin flat sections. The process has changed and constantly evaluated...and getting MUCH better. If you take a peek at a Penryn, Conroe, and Pentium in the same way you see new edging and a much better surface on the Penryn. It's more of a forging process now. And there's a small square detent to take up the expansion/contraction slack so the edges don't have a desire to end up being higher.

Lapping in itself should show some real life gains. It's just perfecting a pretty good process, like blueprinting an engine. What is expected though are very very minute gains. On our end; You can lose 1C, see it, and claim victory, and conclude. But you can also lose 1C just from re-seating a unit with no extra work. To get a result on our end, 10 resets should be made and the averages used. If the average is still 1C Delta, then victory is pretty relative to the work just done isn't it? Also, lapping should stop at flat and not carried over to shiny...as well as flat relative to the mounting parallel and not just flat.

Here you go.

Interesting the forging part. Still sheet metal, you ever get any flexing of the IHS? Some of these high pressure contact areas loading up to the 85 psi of the film on one side of the lid.

Yeah, You got rolled into into another mailing subtest group. It was too much trouble to sort in the short time to make the mail that day.

Sorry! No special affection there

Poll - what do you guys think of the Raw contact film as a diagnostic tool for contact/pressure issues?

It's a good indicator but there's a few inconveniences.
Certain setups it's VERY hard to position properly while putting the heatsink on. Not really the film fault, mostly the mounting mechanism.
Other inconvenience would be that you have no idea how to correct a pressure that is too low, it's trial and error (add a washer/screw more depending on your configuration). Again though, it's not something about the film itself but the mounting.
So overall, I think it's a good and inexpensive tool for someone wanting to find out if he's using his heatsink optimally.
