| 5 Minute Mod Man | All these software programs use a diode or sensor within the processor/cpu. They all have their own way of calculating the temps, but what the sensors dont do is provide true temperature readings. Each processor has a set maximum temp that the sensors will record (TjMax). I think this is pretty much the the max temp that the makers wantthe CPU running at, and the CPU probably wont run past this temp anyway. The what the software gets from these sensors are reports/estimates of about how far below this TjMax the temp currently is. The problem is that different CPUs have different TjMax, so, that has to be adjusted within the programs to get more accurate temps. Some CPUs also have other sensors and some programs may use those (or some type of combination/calculation of multiple sensors). AND on top of all that, some testers have found that the temperatures become far less accurate the further you get below TjMax. So for those that are trying really hard to cool their system, with a low ambient temp, the readings are likely to not be as linear/accurate as we might like. I just tried to condense some info, there is a lot more to it, check out more here and here. Coretemp does a fairly good job, just adjust the TjMax to fit your CPU.
