Wow, that's lame! That MSI board should run your 830 as long as you have BIOS 7160v14 or newer (according to their Mainboard CPU Support List)
Since it is supposed to work, I would think a BIOS flash would be your best bet (given you have an out of date version). For your sake (and sanity), I really hope that solves the problem :!:

thanks for all the support guys :)
it turned out that that was it :!: after the bios flash (with a different cpu) the system just turned on with my D830 too :D
the funny thing is that the previous bios was from july 2005 and the newest one is from august (only 1 month difference) and it made all the difference from completelly unusable to perfectly fine. another funny thing is that after putting in the old HDD from my previous rig it booted up just fine in the new one- there was no need to reinstall windows (just few automatic hardware installations and that's it)
so I'm really happy that I didn't have to RMA anything and wait another 2 months by time I have it ready :P
now my next worry is that the vid card that I bought (vanilla 6800 PCI-E) doesn't seem to have 4 more pipes to open, so I just might end up with "I've got what I paid for" :? which is not usually the case with the video cards I lay my hands on I'm not giving up just yet: I'm downloading the newest version of riva tuner, will try a modified bios and will ask the specialists at MVKTech if they have any idea. will post back on my any progress (maybe I shouldn't clog up this thread since it has nothing to do with the 1800GTO
 )
thanks guys again for the support :P
