Default Re: My videocard won't fit

Sorry for the late response (I was at school).

Anyways, I can't provide pictures because the card is currently in another computer and is really hard to get out and back in. As for what is happening, the back of the card is hitting up against the side of the Arctic Cooling 4TC. Here is a picture of the actual computer (you can kind of see what I'm talking about if you imagine the card in the slot. The card does not hit the capacitors, the only problem is the heatsink).

Click the image to open in full size.

Would I be able to put a different graphics card in this computer (as in an 8600GT, 7900GS, 7600GT, etc)? I'm not planning on overclocking it or anything, or adding another cooler. That was just how the card was when I got it.

wow, that's a poorly laid out motherboard. I don't see any other option other than to get another aftermarker heatsink for your cpu (or another motherboard).

Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan - Retail

^^^ Compact, should do you well if your not an OCer. Core Duos don't have heat issues like a P4 or PD to my knowledge. As for the thoughts of other video cards, forget it. Those are a bit longer that your current card and will have the same issues. You best option it to buy another HSF for your CPU

from the looks of it, it looks like it is the CPU heatsink causing the problems not the video card... as close as that is to the PCI-e slot I doubt any typical PCIe card will fit in there at all until you get a bit taller but slimmer cpu heatsink. The video card heatsink and fan assembly should be facing down, not up....
some suggestions that help raise the cpu hsf off the board some and should allow a bit more clearance for the card:

Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING ACFZ4 80mm Ceramic CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink - Retail

Newegg.com - TR2TT TR2-M12 80mm Ball CPU Cooler - Retail

Newegg.com - vapochill MICRO 06-L-0016 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler - Retail

That Zalman heatsink looks nice, but it actually seems a bit bigger than the one that is currently on it.

Also is there a way I can get a self contained water cooling kit for it maybe (that would possibly replace the current heatsink that's on it right now)?

I tried to look for a replacement mobo but they all either have DDR or no PCIe slots.. you have a rare one there, DDR2 on Socket 478, about your only choice is finding a less intrusive cooler or water cooling for alot more money

Actually, it's technically Socket 479 (or Socket M). I think I'll take your advice here and just scrap it or something. I've already spent $13 replacing the Socket 479 retention module, and got 2GB more RAM (I have 2GB more that's not in use).

I think what I'll do is hold onto the 6800GT and get a new motherboard amd an E4300, E4400, or E6300. Something along that line.

Good call. Let us know if you need any more help, we'll always be here until the RIAA tried to sue us

there ya go... if you can hold off for a few weeks, the C2D prices will be dropping greatly... also the price for the DS3 is at the lowest I have ever seen it so may have to step on up

That board supports Core Duo Laptop processors such as the T2600.
