Hot on the heels of NVIDIA's GTX 200 family launch, AMD will introduce its 55nm RV770-based Radeon 4850 next week.
The Radeon 4850 features a 625 MHz core clock and GDDR3 clock in excess of 2000MHz. Corporate documentation explains that the 480 stream processors on the RV770 processor offer considerable enhancements over the 320 stream processors found in the RV670 core, though AMD memos reveal little about how this is accomplished.

It isn't likely that nVidia is going to idly sit by and allow this to happen. The 99xx series is right around the corner... and then the whole one-upsmanship game will begin anew.

there is no 99xx series. its the GTX 2xx series. newegg has the GTX280 right now (the high end version) for around $650. right now it performs about the same as a 9800GX2 (a little better in some cases, a little worse in others)

The GTX280 is out and is a deception though. If the 4870 is good enough it will hold the crown for a little while.
The 9800GTX on a 55nm is going out soon. Higher clocks, so better perf.

Edit: S_I, the GTX280 doesn't outperform a 9800GX2. A 9800GX2 still wins performance and price wise, unless I've missed an important review. :S
Edit 2: It seems you are right. I guess I was tired when I read about the GTX280. However, even at 1920x1200 the 9800GX2 holds very close to the GTX280, making the 9800GX2 still the best bang for the buck.
