| Sorry guys, didn't mean to sturr up a hornets nest here. I have been reading his reviews for quite some time going back to CPU magazine before he was asked to leave there for questionable ethics. I have always respected him for his bold and possibly arrogant remarks and views. Call me crazy...whatever, but I think the guy has a passion for what he does and doesnt fall by the wayside and repeat what everyone else says. When he feels convicted on something, he lets you know instead of beating around the bush for political or other "feel good" reasons. Yes, there are most other ways to go about alot of things he says but thats Kyle! I guess it comes down to personal taste. I like the guy. I do not own a computer. Divorce sucks... |

| Colonel Calamity | With H, The review methods are a bit different than normal but certain parts are comparable. Most of our problem here is just in the sheer attitude that is portrayed in his reviews as if he is the defining source for all things tech and anyone that says otherwise is a *your choice of expletive*. Most of the "characters" at H are the very definition of #1 below. When it comes to techs, they all pretty much fall into one of 2 categories: 1) god complex (or GC): what they say is the defining word and anyone who says otherwise either is ignored by the GC or sends the GC into a frenzy that is reminiscent of that ADD kid in school that just drank a 12 pack of Jolt cola. 2) student: this type of person is willing to learn anything and everything and if they are proven wrong, they are willing to see where it went wrong and learn the differences. They double check their answers and if they find someone is wrong, they tend to either stay quiet or contact someone quietly about the discrepancy. There is a 3rd type that is a sort of combination of the 2, this can be called the "political party tech"... The problem comes in that they are blind as to the information given by the community. They lock in on a few specific sources of information and anyone who says any of these are wrong or can be done better sends this person into shock. These are the types that say one specific linux distro is the definitive version and all the others are copycats or whatever other term they choose to use. They tend to be narrow minded and are very tough to teach unless it comes from their trusted sources. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! You can like him - no problem with that. In all fairness he is intelligent, has some pretty original ideas and heck - he built [h]. He even managed to snag Josh Norem for a bit (maybe still has him). We post links to [H] all the time. However, as I once had to tell a friend, You can be honest and to the point without being an ass about it. Kyle needs to work on that a bit. And remember something.... If you have to tell everyone that you are better than everyone else - you usually are not. Because, if you were - you wouldn't have to say much at all. People will figure it out. At the end of the day, Kyle is a real person. None of us wish him (or anyone) any personal ill will. But I have to say some of us would like to see him knocked down a notch or two - if only for a little while - just as a reminder that he is part of a community - not all of it. And that's really sad. It should not be like that - but it's really his call by now. Now, as an Assistant Editor at a review site, is what I just posted following the highest standard of professionalism? No. The problem is, we have all been so professional and kept our mouths shut about the 800 pound gorilla that is Kyle (because that is what a professional community does), that his every insult to basically all other sites but [H] go unchecked. So please excuse my lack of professionalism - Kyle must have worn off on me a bit. (That's a snippy joke - in case you didn't get it.) We all have opinions and I am NOT trying to change yours - just enlighten you as to where our boiling rant has come from. Manta | |

| We take both criticism and positive comments very positively | You have nothing at all to apologize for. Everyone has an opinion on everything, and you are all allowed to express it (although I always hope you'll all express your opinions with class). I read several reviews every day, and encourage all of you to read as many reviews and articles as you can. you are only getting one perspective if you read one review, and its not so much that anyone is wrong, but as I've said before, different people look at products differently, and different people place different values on different features. I personally think there is nothing at all wrong with [H]'s reviews, they are opinions like every other sites. I just take exception with them (and anyone like them) who spends as much time criticizing others as writing about a product. Its not just the tech industry, our society has been overrun by the internet generation, where anything goes, and people look up to the cavalier attitude like that. If you value and love your opinion so much, allow others to at least express theirs comfortably. A bit of respect is appreciated everywhere. | |

It happens to all of us. Every bridge I've burned, either through outright stupidity on my part or unintentionally....and thankfully...very damned few, has come back to haunt me. Some call it karma. I choose to call it.... You reap what you sow. Which is sad. Because even today, I still greatly enjoy reading a good many of their reviews. | The way I look at it is that it seems Kyle is always stirring up trouble, and why does he? Because it gets [H]'s name out there and some website hits. Those people on the forums, most of them don't know shit about computers and are cocky. | Maybe Kyle is shooting for a Tech TV spot and needs to stir up interest by being arrogant and annoying. [Tongue in Cheek] Some great media successes were greatly helped by the size of the crowd watching for their demise. Usually however; someones pride causes enough destruction that they never get there to where having a haughty spirit causes them to fall. | Standard benchmarks serve as a solid base to see raw performance numbers. Most reviews I read start with that and then get into opinions on what the benchmarks mean and how it might play out in games. Rarely do I ever see anyone just run a benchmark and call it a day, so I'm not sure I understand where he's coming from. The accuracy of benchmarks is obviously up for debate, but until a better standardized tool and benchmark comes along this is what we have. Subjective experience and testing is also useful, but not a replacement, and as I mentioned I already see reviewers using both. |
