So what then in Crysis should we be looking for that DX10 can do better than DX9 if all the screenshots are on DX9 hardware?

I'm not doubting you that DX10 will have better features and image quality over DX9, I just don't know what the specifics are and what particular things will be improved/added. So if you know, please share some info!

Oh yeah, welcome to HardwareLogic Metal :thumb:

Default DX10 Article

The current (holiday issue) of Maximum PC has an article about this on page 38. It is titled "Direct3D 10 Microsoft wipes the graphics slate clean".

Some of you may or may not have the magazine and I don't think they post these on their website until the next issue comes out. So I will highlight the points that got my attention. Keep in mind, this is not my area of expertise.

They are promising to buck the trend of backward compatibility, in order to stop saddling consumers with bloated software that is unable to take full advantage of their state of the art hardware. So they are jettisoning the entire concept of backward compatibility. Direct 3D 10 not only is designed exclusively for Vista and is incompatible with all previous versions of windows, including XP.

It also says the D3D 10 adds a new process to the pipeline that included vertex processing and pixel processing. It now has 3 processes including the new geometry processing engine which sits between the vertex shader and the rasterizer.

As I read further, it became very clear to me that I have no clue what the heck they are talking about. So if you are interested you had better buy the magazine or wait to see it they post the article on their website.

I did notice a picture from flight simulator X on one of the pages. The caption says that since ATI and Nvidia are not yet shipping their DX10 cards, that all Microsoft could provide for the article was an artists rendering of what it will look like running on D3D 10 Hardware. It isn't a very good picture, so I don't know what to think.

Interesting, thanks for the info jph.

As far as the backward compatability goes, I know that DX10 games will not run on WinXP, but the question on my mind is "Can you run DX10 games on Vista with a DX9 card?"

If you want that DX9 card to run DX10 games in their full glory, then no. This is simply impossible with that new geometry-processing engine required to run DX10.

However, you can run DX10 games that's coded to run DX9 on Vista. Vista has both DX10 and DX9 built-in to support all games.

OK, that makes sense. That's what I figured, but wasn't sure.

Hmmm. Good news sort of. However, i believe you would still be stuck on the same boat. If you want teh new eye-candy, you would need a new videocard weather tha be DX 9L or DX 10. If you were to buy a new one, might as well buy DX 10. Only advantage of this, is that you can stay with windows XP.

The only reason I'm concerned about moving to a DX10 card is because all the leaked specs of the new cards just have rediculous power requirements (and heat output), and that is not my thing.

I saw those "concept" cards for the G80 and I just can't believe that it has two PCI-E power connectors. If you wanted SLI, you will need a powersupply with four pci-e connectors. The cooler is massive as well and there is even a water cooling version.

Yeah, the requirements for nvidia's g80 do seem steep. There is news, however, that around Q1-Q2 of '07 that nvidia will release slower versions of the card that will be more reasonably priced for the average customer. Hopefully, those cards won't require so much electricity, lol.

and hi all! This forum feels very welcoming.
