Default Re: AMD to Use Qimonda's GDDR5 Memory

so with your reasoning you must be able to:
play a DVD on a blu ray they both look the same on the inside
use a 939 chip on an AM2 board
Plug DDR2 in a DDR 3 slot
They all work basically the same way but yet they are not interchangeable!

In particular, the performance-enhancing doubling of the I/O clock rate is missing. It had severe overheating issues due to the nominal DDR voltages. ATI has since designed the GDDR technology further into GDDR3, which is more true to the DDR2 specifications, though with several additions suited for graphics cards.
I read that a few places and it does not answer the questions... but thats ok I will let the thread run its course and let comments about the GDDR5 continue... sorry for the derailment

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

Nah, it's a good topic to segue into, and would actually make for a great interview question. To answer it in this thread would take either (A) someone inherently knowledgeable with the various RAM standards and able to 'dumb' it down into layman speak (where's Boy'N'Black at!?), or (B) a lot of whitepaper scanning. The technologies are different, but I fall under (C), which means I'm not nerd enough to know the intricacies.

@onebxr: yeah I read that too and they know less than we do

@One4: We may as well separate this into a separate topic to keep this on topic about the GDDR5 being used with AMDs latest graphics cards...
