I got to tell ya all, that early reviews are not very pretty with the 8600!!!!

Read this review before committing to buying an 8600

It is a damn shame too, I was really looking forward to being able to upgrade in the next 6 to 8 months to one of these cards, but to hell with that

what i'm most disappointed over is the lack of a more midrange card.
i guess the 8800gts 320mb model will be it eh?

The 8600's are still good cards guys, they are just a little overpriced right now compared to other offerings. They do outperform the GeForce 7600 series, they just aren't the amazing bang for the buck mid-range card we are used to seeing come from nVidia... :dontknow:

apparently...
at left click we are already spec'ing out the budget-rigs to slaughter vista basic for home users.
celeron D's a gb of corsair and 8500's.
anyone who does builds at a local-ish shop and has had some time for vista to annoy them knows the dilemma of shipping out a non-DX10 compliant video card in a otherwise DX10 ready machine.

Ditto my friend. We're barely selling any Vista, we still have a high demand for XP.

yup
more and more people are switching to linux lol
although we are still selling a lot of xp pro

but we recently spec'd out a core 2, 2gb of ram, 8500gt box for ~$650 that we plan to sell as 'a basic core 2 duo box designed with the home user in mind to get the most out of their vista experience'
if you want the specs i can post them, just trying to minimize clutter now =P

As gvblake22 has stated, the 8600 GTS is just overpriced right now. Hopefully it will reach its "intended" price range - somewhere along the lines of the "current" 7600GT range: ~ $160US ($30 US less than it is currently) range by the time ATI/AMD sends out its "next/current" gen GPUs.

But, until NVidia brings the price down to this range, I really don't see why anyone should bother buying this under achiever when you can get the more competent 7900GS or x1950Pro. This is even more of a downer than the 8800 640MB (cause its cost/performance ratio sux).

Being overpriced is what no competition does to us as consumers. I think when ATI finally comes out with the DX10 cards we will see alot of prices fall. I am not buying into the DX10 cards until I see a DX10 game, and see how well they do with them. Right now we dont know if a 8 series card will run a 10 series game.

The main reason it is overpriced isn't because NVIDIA has a monopoly, actually its far from that. The main reason why the 8600 series is overpriced simply because the board just came out. Give it a month or two and Nvidia would decrease the price down to its market values (*what people would actually pay for this) [* which sure as hell better be somewhere close to the 7600GT values] irregardless if ATI/AMD actually delivers.

ATI/AMD better bring out something "better" (price/performance ratios) than the 8800GTX and 8800GTS 320MB (640MB = crap) with their HD2800s or else it might actually turn into a 1 horse race.
