But isn't the 780i incompatible with the quad-core Penryns? I guess that doesn't really matter, looks like most people are going straight from Conroe to Nehalem.

Let us know whether it was worth it or not!

No, the nForce 700 series list support for LGA775 45nm processors (Penryn). Maybe you are thinking of the nForce 600 series, which have support through the chipset, but motherboards were not made to the correct specifications for them?

Ah, thanks Blake, I read some where that only the dual-core Penryns are compatible with the 780i. I guess it's a better chipset than I thought!

Common sense should tell you that wouldn't be true. There's no way nVidia would shoot themselves in the foot like that by releasing a new chipset that doesn't support the latest processors it was designed for. I don't think I've ever seen a new chipset release that didn't support all currently available processors for a particular socket.

I guess it just reinforces the point that you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

Do you remember where you got this information from?

Is this upgrade even worth it? I can't imagine disassembling my entire computer just for a motherboard that is only a minor upgrade =\

A different forum, namely THIS one. You are right, though, I was thinking of the 680i, not the 780i, so it is my fault.

There is a reason I didn't get a Christmas present from the Cap, and it's times like these that make it obvious.

Unless you are having problems with your current 680i based motherboard or have to have the latest and greatest hardware, then no, it probably isn't worth the hassle (if it is a hassle for you to swap motherboards). If you wanted SLI and needed better support and piece of mind when running a 45nm LGA775 Intel processor, then it might be worth it.

HAHA, don't be so hard on yourself man! We all make mistakes from time to time. Nobody is perfect, that's why we congregate and form this community so we can bounce ideas and questions off each other!

Besides, XS is notorious for all kinds of speculation and misinformation. They are almost always among the first people to get engineering samples from AMD and Intel and run some of the craziest setups around just for running the aforementioned hardware into the ground.

I may have to keep an eye out for the recertified boards that start floating around in a month or two

Thanks HL and Corsair!
