The drivers are what tell the OS how to use the device or use it better... so without the OS, the drivers are pretty much useless. So yes, install windows, then install updated drivers.
As for the BIOS, that is an entirely different arena which will take much more explanation. I would suggest getting the system up and running first. and no, it is not done from within windows on an older system like that.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

First get things up and running. Get the OS loaded (Windows). Once Windows is up and running then you install the drivers for your motherboard and any other hardware. Don't worry about the BIOS at this point. The only thing you need to do prior to loading Windows is set the BIOS to boot from the CD or DVD ROM drive. That way the system will boot from the Windows disk and get things going. Beyond that, don't worry about the BIOS.

Ok how do I go about doing that then setting it to boot from the cd or dvd that the OS is on? Since I will be installing on to a new HDD, sorry if this is a silly question

When you first start the comp, it will ask you if you want to enter set up. Push whatever button it asks for. Then find your boot sequence and arrange it so you are booting from your install drive first.

WAIT!!!!
There is a very simple Registry edit that deletes all of the drivers from you previous motherboard!!!! I need to dig around in my crap to find it, but I have done this many, many times and it works perfect!!!!

I will post back here just as soon as I find it

this situation is problematic at best. It is better to start fresh and only import your backed up files

Not true! I have done this with many, many customers doing upgrades!
The last one I did, the customer upgraded from an old Via chipset running a AMD xp 1800+ and upgraded to an AM2 Nvidia with a 5200 and it worked just fine.

I have never had any issues doing this registry edit

Just need to find it

ok so that leaves it as try your registry edit first, if it fails or causes problems then start fresh..

Whew, finally found the damn thing

Ok, first thing first. Click start, run, then type in regedit.

In regedit find this key :

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG > SYSTEM > CURRENTCONTROLSET > ENUM

You simply Delete the entire ENUM key close regedit and shutdown your PC

right there and move the HDD to you new Rig. Boot the system. When

Windows begins to load it will start detecting your new hardware and

build your new hardware profiles ( this may take more than one restart

of the OS) .

When it says to delete the entire ENUM key, that includes the original

folder ENUM!

Note: as soon as you get this deleted, you have to shut down the computer and not start it up again until the drive is in the other system!!!!!
That means, as soon as you save the edit just shut it down! Do not go back to the windows main system or it will start finding new hardware on the old system!!! This is very, very important!

Good luck mate
