Default Re: ECS KA3-MVP overclocking questions...

I've been having this really weird issue with my computer where is will turn back on without warning after being shutdown through windows. The weirdest part is that it will turn on sometimes right away and other times it will turn on after half an hour.
I'm really confused by this because I've checked power management settings and there is nothing I noticed that should be causing this.
Any help would be appreciated.

System:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition @3.01GHz (AM2) + Zalman CNPS9500AM2
Crucial Ballistx Tracer 2GB PC2-6400 4-4-4-12
ECS KA3-MVP Extreme
Sapphire Radeon HD3850 512MB
Monitors: Samsung 226BW 22" Wide LCD & Samsung 955DF 19" CRT
Creative SB X-FI Fatality w/Front I/O Port - Cyber Acoustics 5.1 Speakers (Sennheiser HD555 heaphones)
4 x 320GB Seagate Sata II
Mushkin 550W Modular PSU
Samsung DVD/CD-R/RW
Thermaltake Armor Case

Processor Temp 50C load
System Temp ambient ~30

Overclocking hardware can produce weird actions. Try setting it back to default specs and see if these events keep occurring.

I'm wondering what would give the biggest performance boost...
A new videocard (His X1950 Pro 256MB) or new ram 2GB as listed above?
For gaming, a better video card will always produce more noticeable performance improvements. For general useage and overclocking, more/better/faster RAM would be the way to go.

Check your BIOS for any "wake on" events that will turn the system on if a certain event happens or a particular condition is met.

Has anyone ever tried using Cool n Quiet and overclocking on the ka3 mvp?

It is generally discouraged to use Cool'n'Quiet (or any other similar power management schemes like Intel's EIST) while overclocking because of the constantly changing voltages. You run the risk of the computer slowing the clock speed and dropping the voltage while overclocked, which could lower the voltage to something that is still faster than stock but the voltage drop is too low to even support the new speed, all resulting in instability. It's much more reliable to have a constant, unchanging voltage to the processor while it is overclocked so you know that any instability is because of a lack of stability testing on the user's part, not because of some internal changes/fluctuations.

Some people claim to have successfully overclocked with Cool'n'Quiet enabled, but there are just as many who proclaim just the opposite. I say the benefit is really not worth it and you should either overclock without C'n'Q or leave everything at stock (with or without C'n'Q enabled).

OH YEAH...
Welcome to HardwareLogic! :wavey:

Yeah, I tried it... it doesn't work. It will override your clock settings.
With my 5000+ Black Edition it keeps the default clock multiplier rather than the new one that I set for it in the BIOS.
