Default Re: Asus P5k-E wifi Question

Well, I'll probably know here in a bit, since if it does the same thing in this case, odds are the i/o shield has something bent funky or something of the sort.

EDIT: Well, crap, it's doing the same thing in the clear case now. There must be something crazy going on with either the i/o plate, or something similar to that. Time to take it apart and pull the io shield, and try it all again.

EDIT2: Well, no i/o plate, no post still. I wish I some of the little plastic/paper standoff spacers that came with my antec, I bet those would help a bundle right now. I might have to just put electical tape over the standoff holes in the motherboard and try it yet again. Something is giving it trouble.

EDIT3: Well, I found some plastic spacers for the motherboard screws, but even with those on it's not working, so either something is shorting out on the backside, or it's something else? I dunno.

Did you make sure not to install extra standoffs (ones that don't directly screw into the motherboard)?

Very much so. In the antec case, it was actually short 2 standoffs, lol. And this clear case only has holes for standoffs in the 9 locations where I need them, so it's pretty foolproof there.

I did just pull the left side panel off of the clear case, with the mobo still attached, and it's still seems to be having trouble, so at least this way I can pretty much isolate it to the standoffs, behind the mobo causing the trouble. Now I just need to slap some electrical tape on the them so that there is an insulator between them and the mobo, and hope that helps.

Cuase if that doesn't help, I'm gonna be back at square one.

Hmm before trying that, can you lay it on his back so the motherboard is in horizontal position like when it's on the box?
I'm starting to think it's something when your motherboard is in vertical position. Like some kind of connection failing (video not in properly?)

I tried it horizontal both while it was still completely assembled in the case, and while it was just attached to the side panel with no accessories plugged in. No dice either way.

At least it turns right on and posts when I take it off the side panel, lol. Gives me a little confidence that I'm on the right track. Just gotta get some electrical tape in between the standoffs and the mobo... fun fun.

EDIT: Well, I got the electrical tape installed, and it posted the first time I tried it with it attached back to the side panel, but nothing after that. Something is still off... either the tape ripped on one of the standoffs, or something funkier is afoot.

EDIT2: Wait, it just posted again. Better not just be getting my hopes up. Grr.

EDIT3: Nevermind, it looks like it's working as good attached to the side panel as it did sitting on the box. Which is about as good as I can ask for, lol. Now to try the fsp psu one more time, so that I know whether I need to get a new powersupply or not.

No kidding. It was posting fine with the cooler master psu, so that made me happy.

Wouldn't overclock though, it was just loading default settings no matter what I punched in. Probably just needs a cmos reset, but I have bigger fish to fry.

Currently, I went and blew out the dust from my fsp unit (it was fairly dusty, I've seen worse, but I've seen better too), and I have it hooked up. Hopefully it was just a little dusty, cause I'd love to be able to spend that 200 bucks on something other than a psu, like a sweet new case or a video card.

On that same note, it just posted twice in a row with the fsp unit.. hopefully it's all falling into place now.

EDIT: Of course, now that I say that, it stops posting with either psu. Grrrr. /clearcmos.

EDIT2: Yup, back to where I started. Clear cmos, get one post, then nothing. Maybe I need another layer of electrical tape, or maybe something completely different. Either way, I'm done for the night, since I still don't seem to be any closer to having this thing closer. (at least, not close enough to make me happy.)

That's it, I'm rmaing this board. It's acting up with both psu's in or out of the case.

I think it's been toying with me the whole time.

Have you tried any other mobo's with both psu's, and in the Antec 900 case?

Yeah, that fsp is the one that's been powering my abit and gigabyte boards, in the antec case, and my sunbeam case, plus an xclio case, and the cooler master was running a friends am2 board in a different antec 900 for a long time too, without issue.
