Hmm maybe your memory is getting detected improperly so when you clear the CMOS it uses the most basic config and when you reboot it wants to use the EPP and for some reason it doesn't change the voltage or the timings properly?

I tried setting the right voltage and timings one of the times I got into bios.... I'm about to head back in and check some more settings.

Well, the 20 minutes I spend checking settings and changing settings and checking settings again paid off, it's booting now.

Still not sure exactly which setting it was that fixed it. Hmmm. Oh well.

EDIT: Nope, it did it again. Craptastic. Might be time to flash the bios.

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

I supposed I'll have to go find a speaker for the mobo... hopefully it's trying to give me a post code.
Clearing the CMOS will get it to post at default or undervalued settings. Once you tinker with them, if you're getting a non-boot, non-post scenario, it usually means one of the settings you inputted is out of whack or too aggressive. With Asus boards, you typically won't need to clear the CMOS - just turn the system off for about 10 seconds and then fire it back up.

That's the thing... the only time I've gotten it to actually boot up and load into everything was after tinkering with the settings. With the default settings, it won't load after a reboot. (and even with the tinkering, after the 2nd restart it wouldn't load.)

I'll probably try flashing the bios tonight to the latest release, hopefully that helps. (I'll plug a speaker in too, hopefully I get a post error, at least.)

Been running crossfire with two 3870's for some time now. 1800's shouldn't put a dent in anything even if both slots were 8x. PCIe x16 hasn't found one card to make anything hiccup until the GX2/X2 cards. Not from bandwidth, but from sync'ing up. This isn't additive computing, but rather parallel processing with a daughter and master card.

However, if you keep reading it gets worse. If you stab the second card in there, it goes to 4x. If you want to use the PCIe x1 slot, you drop the black slot to 2x. Not a big deal with the 1800's again, but starts to show it's effects on the 3870's.

The zonarDX2 is a great card for sure, but there's not a noticeable difference with it and the PCI version. I think you'll do just fine with the 1800's in crossfire and the PCIe Asus card. But that'll be the ceiling for what you with crossfire. The next logical move in the board's graphical life would be to skip Crossfire, and grab a 48xx card this June/July.

Big nudge here to go get the latest BIOS right off the bat. There's some funky stuff going on with all early versions, and the last two seem to be fine. Grab 1013 and flash it. Put an animation in the POST screen while you're at it ;)

I want to say that the board came to me with the 1014 bios install, although I asus's website only has up to 1013.

I'm gonna have to take another look at that... but I could swear it said 1014.
Either way it's gonna get flashed with 1013 tonight.

And also, I just sold my 7600's and my xfi for enough to get me a 3870... so I'm probably going to be pulling my 1800's soon anyways. (and with any luck, selling them and getting a 2nd 3870, even if they won't perform at 100% on this mobo, it'll be close enough.) Or keep the first 3870 and get a real water cooling loop. We'll see.

Dang, i hate being at work when I have computers to work on at home.

Well, flashing to 1013 isn't helping much. Still having the same problem where half the time it just wont do anything. It acts as if the cpu power cord isn't even plugged in (it is).

I mean, just now, boot up, get into bios, set everything up the way it should be, turn off. Boot up again. Nothing.

clear cmos.

Get into bios. Change the settings to what they should be, relaxed a bit.(looser timings and whatnot).

reboot. nothing.

every once in a while it'll post up once, give me the nifty ai logo splash screen. Boot up fine. But the next restart it's dead to the world.

It's got me confused, that's for sure.

I guess tomorrow I'll try something.
Dunno what though.

Yeah sometimes sleeping on it reminds you that you forgot something essential. Most of the time it's the memory settings, but I'm not sure what you changed lately (board only?) and if something else you can't obviously stike a faulty component.

Yeah, I think i'm going to just pull the board out of my case, so I can hook stuff up one thing at a time.

Hopefully this ocz ram doesnt just hate this board.... I know there were problems with this ram and asus boards for a while (some of the ram timings wouldn't go high enough, because it topped out at 40, but this bios doesn't have that issue).

I might have to borrow some ddr2 from someone and try that instead.

We'll see what happens if I get around to it today. Not feeling motivated about it right now, lol.

Also, yeah, I just swapped the board into this computer.
