All memory is reliable. It all should basically work for a very long time. You really can't screw up putting someone else's IC's on a piece of board. Preferred brands gets into ability to overclock more than plugging in and running, and this is where brands separate by picking the IC's to use in their product.

Some find what they can and keep it cheap, some find the best and hand pick optimal units to put their name on. The big brands will have 5 different lines in the same speed bin because they sort them so specific. G.Skill isn't bad, and not for the prices at all. No brand is "bad". But when put through the ringer, they don't shine as brightly and do pretty close to what the sticker says they should do. Others surprise over and over again by being better than the sticker by far. This is why Kingston, Crucial, and OCZ are so well spoken about.
