Default Re: Finding Mushkin Redline memory...

I was just relaying my experience with mushkin memory rated over 800MHz on the same P965 board he has listed in his signature. This exact same memory overclocks great to 1180MHz on the EP35-DS3P Gigabyte board.

Even if you quote our very own Review:

Quote:
My test bench has been made up of a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R motherboard for the last couple of months, mainly because the board supports both DDR2 & 3. However, my little house of cards came crumbling down when I installed the Mushkin HP2-8500 kit in my Gigabyte board. The kit failed at default timings, regardless of voltages or settings. Now, this isn't the first time I've encountered this issue, and Mushkin was great, as they immediately sent out another kit in the event that there was an issue with the first memory kit. I tried again with the new kit, and encountered the same results. After talking with the Mushkin support staff, I found the issue to lie with the Gigabyte board's secondary memory settings simply being too aggressive.
"Please read the following information if you have issues with the 2nd kit. As I recall, the Gigabyte boards set some subtimings very tight.
Here are the subtiming values we use with ASUS boards:
tWR 5
tRRD 3
Rank Write to READ 11
Write to Precharge 12
Refresh to Act 42
Read to Precharge 5
Note that the Read to Precharge value will most likely read two clocks lower when using memset in Windows. We test in dual channel above spec with RST Pro2 so our test environments are almost identical."

Problem solved, and kit worked perfectly....big kudos to the Mushkin support staff.

I am just tossing this out as a possibility...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Well, I haven't had any problems with my mushkin ram, even though it's cheap not-meant-for-running-faster-than-800hmz ram it would post at 1000mhz, lol. Wasn't necessarily stable above 800mhz, but I don't really expect it.

And this ram I'm getting will likely be going into an abit FP-IN9 anyways, not a gigabyte board, so it shouldn't be a problem (and if there is a problem, it'll probably be a different one, lol.)

ok since it will be going into abit then scratch what I said and only worry about it in a gigabyte P965 board

Again screwballl, the point remains regarding generalizations. With regards to our review, we posted the culprit, which lay with the secondary settings, and the quote you conveniently omitted was:

It's okay to post personal experiences, as it is to point out our own like the above, along with the fix rather than selectively quoting our review. But we can't/won't let broad-sweeping generalizations go unchecked. Your future cooperation is appreciated.

thought I copied the whole thing... must have missed the last sentence... this was not intentional. (edited the above quote to reflect this, my bad)

Hmmmm.... I understand what you mean about the subtimings now. I went in and manually set all the subtimings to what they're supposed to be by default, instead of letting them sit at auto.... and zing. I swear booting into vista was much, much faster... normally i have to wait abit for msn and the sidebar and stuff to load, but they came up almost instantly (i also oc'd from 2.8ghz to 3.15 ghz, and from 800mhz on the ram to 900mhz... but still. this is intriguing.)

I'm gonna have to mess around with this now.
